S&P 500 GICs Level 1 sector ETFs Ranks

This post highlights the Tactical and 52-week Ranks for the S&P 500 GICS Level 1 sector ETFs as of the week ending 1/9/2026.


The Top five Tactical Ranks are Materials, Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary, Industrials, and Technology. Communication Services dropped out of the top five, replaced by Discretionary, which ranks at third from eighth in the prior week.

  • Materials jumped to first from fifth, unseating Healthcare from the top slot.

  • However, Healthcare leadership also remains solid, with first to third place finishes over the past nine weeks.

  • Technology has shown consistent leadership within the top five over the last 10 weeks, but this growth sector has lost momentum and dropped to fifth from second last week.

  • Materials, Industrials, and Technology also have top five 52-week Ranks - see below for 52-week Ranks.


The Bottom five Tactical Ranks are Real Estate, Utilities, Consumer Staples, Communication Services, and Financials. Discretionary dropped out of the bottom five, replaced by Communication Services, which ranks at eighth versus fourth in the prior week. Energy also moved out of the bottom five, swapping places with Financials last week.

  • Real Estate and Staples have remained in the bottom five over the last 10 weeks, underscoring persistent relative weakness.

  • Utilities have had a bottom five ranking over the last six weeks.

The Top Five 52-week Ranks are Technology, Industrials, Communication Services, Financials, and Materials. Utilities move out of the top five, replaced by Materials.

  • Technology, Communication Services, and Industrials show solid long-term rankings, holding top five positions consistently over the last 10 weeks.

  • Technology has ranked first over the last 10 weeks.

  • Financials have had a top five rank over the last six weeks.


The Bottom Five 52-week Ranks are Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, and Healthcare. Materials and Discretionary moved out of the bottom five. Utilities and Healthcare moved into the bottom five.

  • Real Estate, Consumer Staples, and Energy have ranked in the bottom five over the last 10 weeks, reinforcing persistent relative underperformance and a clear absence of longer-term leadership.
