S&P 500 GICs Level 1 sector ETFs Ranks

This post highlights the Tactical and 52-week Ranks for the S&P 500 GICS Level 1 sector ETFs as of the week ending 1/2/2026.


The Top five Tactical Ranks remain Healthcare, Technology, Industrials, Communication Services, and Materials. Discretionary and Financials dropped out of the top five, replaced by Industrials and Materials.

  • Technology continues to show the most consistent leadership, ranking first or second in each of the last 10 weeks.

  • Healthcare leadership also remains solid, with first and third place finishes over the past nine weeks.

  • Communication Services has been steady as well, holding a third to fifth place tactical rank for seven straight weeks.


The Bottom five Tactical Ranks are Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Utilities, Consumer Discretionary, and Energy. Industrial rose out of the bottom five replaced by Discretionary, which dropped to eighth from third.

  • Real Estate and Staples have remained in the bottom five over the last 10 weeks, underscoring persistent relative weakness.

  • Energy and Utilities recently rotated into the bottom five as of 12/12 and 12/5, respectively.

The Top Five 52-week Ranks are Technology, Communication Services, Industrials, Financials, and Utilities, unchanged from the prior week.

  • Technology, Communication Services, and Industrials show solid long-term rankings, holding top five positions consistently over the last 10 weeks.

  • Technology and Communication Services have ranked first and second, respectively, over the last 10 weeks.

  • Financials have had a top five rank over the last five weeks.


The Bottom Five 52-week Ranks are Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Energy, Consumer Discretionary, and Materials.

  • Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Energy, and Materials have ranked in the bottom five over the last 10 weeks, reinforcing persistent relative underperformance and a clear absence of longer-term leadership. However, Materials have improved in rank with the potential to move out of the bottom five in coming weeks.

  • Discretionary has been in the bottom five over the last five weeks.
